About Kevin J Gross

I grew up on a small farm near Freeman, South Dakota. My nearest neighbors were half a mile away. I had one brother who was significantly older than I. Growing up on a farm I had quite a bit of time to entertain myself and I developed a robust imagination. I also developed an interest in science and experimentation. By high school I was especially interested in chemistry, physics and math. In high school I was exposed to photography, too (pun intended).

I graduated from Goshen College with majors in chemistry and physics and a minor in computer science. I started working in computing for Goshen College. Over the years I took courses in photography and a course in art design. I also discovered fractals. After working almost exclusively with black and white photography, the vibrant colors of fractals were a real treat for my creativity.

When I bought my first house it came with a large perennial flower garden. I really enjoyed flower gardening and the beautiful colors really stimulated my developing artistic creativity. My primary outlet for this was photographing my flowers so I could share them with friends everywhere.

After over 25 years in computing my job ended. I thought, "Hey, this would be a good time for a mid-life career change. What would I like to do?" One thought that kept popping in my head was trying to earn a living doing fractal artwork. I kept thinking, "But no one makes a living from their art." However, after doing some research I found that a few people do make their living from their art. I thought, "I'll never know if I am one of them unless I try." That was how Spirit Fire Images was born and how this great experiment began.

I'm probably not your typical artist. I came into the field of art through the back door via science, math, computers and gardening. I think that gives me some rather unique perspectives. But when it comes down to the bottom line the math, science and computers don't really matter. What really matters is how my art makes you feel and what it says to you. I hope you enjoy my fractal world!
